Daenerys and Drogon Cosplay

We love Game of Thrones so of course dressed as Daenerys and Drogon for the 2019 Renaissance Festival GoT competition. I dressed as the slain Mother of Dragons, and we even reenacted the scene where she dies and Drogon flies away with her. Our theatrics and costumes won the contest!

Drogon

I made Drogon’s tail out of EVA craft foam. I hand cut the dragon tail & spikes out of foam, used a metal coat hanger to give it structure, hot glued the spikes on the tail edges, glued the tail closed into a pocket, and stuffed it with cotton to fill it out. I had a some strong transparent paper that I added for the end of the tail. To get it to stay on Scott, I attached it to a belt with the end of the coat hanger attached inside the tail.

I bought the red/black wings, dragon mask, black scale leggings, and black shirt. We had some old Five Finger shoes that we repurposed for feet. I spray painted everything with red and metallic black to look like Drogon. It was fun to make the wings flap – the kids loved it!

Daenerys

I had already pieced together the “dark” Daenerys costume for our GoT premiere party utilizing a black dress, boots, and wig I already had. I created the grey cape with a dragon clasp for the party. I added the retractable dagger, which I painted the hilt with black metallic paint (to age it). I glued strong magnets on the dagger hilt and inside my dress so that it would stay attached to me. I removed the spring inside the dagger so the knife would stay retracted when I got “stabbed”. The streak of fake blood across the face was the final touch to complete the slain Mother of Dragons costume.

Slain Mother of Dragons

Reenacting the slaying of Daenarys and Drogon’s reaction (including flying away with her) was a blast. This is likely what won us the competition!

Competitors

It started to pour right before the GoT costume competition (if you are wondering why we look pretty damp and the blood is starting to run). We got pictures with the other Mother of Dragons at the competitors. We actually met Anne at this festival (first pic on left), and are now good friends! The prize for winning the contest was a legit medieval sword!
